Wiedereinmal in Deutschland - Back to Germany

Im April waren wir in Deutschland um unsere Familien und Freunde zu besuchen. Leider war die erste Woche nicht besonders gut weil Emma und Judith krank wurden (Emma bekam eine Lungenentzündung und Judith hatte eine Mittelohr- und Mandelentzündung) und sie natürlich öfters beim Doktor waren, Medikamente einnehmen mussten und die Zeitumstellung auch länger dauerte.

Die folgenden zwei Wochen waren aber dann um so besser. Das Wetter war herrlich und wir unternahmen viel. Einige Höhepunkte waren ein Ausflug zum Playmobil Fun Park in Zirndorf, ein Besuch im Schoss Baldern, Ostern (mit zweimal Ostereiersuche) oder eine Ausfahrt in einem echten Feuerwehrauto. Stefan hat auch einmal vorgeführt wie originale Bierdosenhähnchen gegrillt werden. Der eigentliche Anlass für die Reise war aber der siebzigste Geburtstag von Emmas Oma. Es war ein sehr schönes Fest. Als Geschenk hat sie ein Flugticket nach Kalifornien erhalten. Emma freut sich schon sehr ihrer Oma endlich ihr Zimmer im Herbst zeigen zu können.

We were in Germany to visit with our families and friends back in April. Unfortunately the first week wasn't all that great since Emma and Judith got sick (Emma got pneumonia and Judith had an ear infection and tonsillitis). Naturally they had to see the doctor often, take their medicine and getting over the jetlag took more time.

The following two weeks were much better though. The weather was fantastic and we managed to do a lot. Some highlights were a trip to the Playmobil Fun Park in Zirndorf, a vist to the Castle in Baldern, Easter (with two easter egg hunts) or a ride in a real fire truck. Stefan even showed how to cook original beer can chickens. But the main reason for the journey was the seventieth birthday of Emma's grandma. It was a wonderful celebration. She got flight tickets to California as a present. Emma can't wait to finally show her grandma her room in fall.

Visit to Mother Goose Land

Die Kinder in Emmas Kindergarten führten heute ein Schauspiel auf: "Visit to Mother Goose Land". In einer halben Stunde wurde die Reise mit viel Tanz und Gesang vorgeführt. Emma war zusammen mit den anderen Jüngsten im Kindergarten ein kleiner Stern und tanzte zum Lied "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Natürlich waren Judith und Stefan sehr stolz auf sie und wenn man ganz genau hingeschaut hat, konnte man sehen wie gerührt Judith war.

The children of Emma's preschool performed a play today: "Visit to Mother Goose Land". The journey was put on stage with lots of singing and dancing during one half hour. Emma was a little star together with the other youngest kids and danced to the song "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star". Judith and Stefan were of course very proud of her. And if looked close one could see how touched Judith was.

Happy Halloween!

The first Halloween in our new neighborhood was great fun. Our friends and their two girls joined us for the traditional Trick or Treat. Lots of candy was collected. Happy Halloween to all our families and friends!

United Nations Day

Emmas Kindergarten hat heute das jährliche United Nations Day Fest gefeiert. An diesem Tag sind alle Kinder und Eltern eingeladen sich in ihrer jeweiligen traditionellen Weise zu kleiden, um die Vielfalt dieser Welt gemeinsam zu feiern. Emma war in der typischen frühreren Rieser Bauerntracht unserer alten Heimat gekleidet. Es waren weit über 30 Nationen vertreten was zu einem sehr farbenfrohen Tag beitrug. Ein Höhepunkt war, wenn die Kinder Lieder in ihrer Landessprache vorgesungen haben. Zum Abschluss gab es dann noch ein Potluck-Mittagessen, zu der jeder eine typische Speise seines Herkunftslandes mitbrachte . Wie üblich isst man dabei viel zu viel weil es ja soviel Leckers zu probieren gibt!

Emma's preschool celebrated the annual United Nations Day festival today. At this day all children and their parents are invited to dress in their respective traditional way to celebrate together the diversity of this world. Emma was dressed in the typical former farmers attire of our old homeland the Ries - also known as "Rieser Bauerntracht". More than 30 nations were represented which contributed to a very colorful day. One of the highlights was when the older children sing songs in their mother language. The celebrations were rounded off with a potluck lunch to which all children had brought a typical meal of their home country. As usual one eats way too much because so many delicious dishes had to be tasted!

Harvest Festival at Ardenwood Historic Farm

Gestern haben wir das Erntefest auf dem Historischen Ardenwood Bauernhof zusammen mit Freunden besucht. Dieses jährliche Fest bietet viele traditionelle Aktivitäten rund um das Leben und Arbeiten auf einem Bauernhof wie es in der Vergangenheit üblich war:  Eiskrem machen, Wolle spinnen, schmieden, backen, Mais ernten und vieles mehr. Wie in den USA zu dieser Zeit üblich gibt es auch ein grosses Feld mit Kürbissen. Wir haben uns aber auf des Ernten von Mais konzentriert um unser Haus für den Herbst zu schmücken. Zum Abschluss sind wir dann noch mit einer kleinen Eisenbahn durch eine Ansammlung von Eukalyptusbäume gefahren. In ein paar Wochen werden dort unzählige orange Monarchschmetterlinge eintreffen um zu überwintern. Ein guter Grund den Bauernhof nochmals zu Besuchen!

Together with friends we visited the Harvest Festival at the Ardenwood Historic Farm yesterday. This annual festival offers lots of traditional activities showcasing the life and work on a farm in the past: making ice cream, spinning wool, forging, backing, harvesting corn and many more. Customary to this time in the year there is also a large field of pumpkins. We focussed, however, on cropping corn for decorating our house for the fall. Before we left we made a short ride with a small train through a collection of eucalyptus trees. In a few weeks countless orange monarch butterflies will arrive there to stay for the winter. A good reason to visit the farm again!

Letztes Wochenende waren wir im Big Basin Redwoods State Park zum ersten Mal überhaupt beim Zelten. Zusammen mit einer befreundeten Familie haben wir unsere Zelte im Huckleberry Campground für zwei Nächte aufgeschlagen. In der ersten Nacht war das Schlafen auf dem harten Boden ziemlich ungemütlich. Die zweite Nacht ging dann schon viel besser. Unsere Freunde haben schon häufiger gezeltet und sind daher gut ausgerüstet. Besonders das gasbetriebene Kochfeld war sehr praktisch: Wir kochten Nudeln mit Lachs und Gemüserisotto zum Abendessen und genossen Kaffee oder Tee mit Rührei zum Frühstück.

Unsere Freunde haben zwei Töchter: Emma und Annette. Um Verwechslungen zu vermeiden haben sich die drei Mädchen schon vor geraumer Zeit Namenszusätze ausgedacht: "grosse Emma" und "kleine Emma". Das funktioniert beim gemeinsamen Spielen überraschend gut. Ein Höhepunkt war sicherlich die geführte Wanderung durch den Redwood Wald in der Dämmerung. Wegen der grossen Gruppe haben wir aber ausser ein paar Fledermäusen nicht viele Tiere gesehen, die Mädchen hatten aber auch so Spass mit den Taschenlampen. Und das Tiererlebnis wurde dann später nachgereicht als sich am Zeltplatz ein Waschbär in den Kofferraum eines unserer Autos geschlichen hatte um nach Essen zu suchen!

We went camping for the first time ever at Big Basin Redwoods State Park last weekend. Together with a friendly family we made camp at the Huckleberry Campground. Sleeping on the hard ground was rather uncomfortable the first night. But the second night was much better already. Our friends have camped quite a few times in the past and are therefore well equipped. In particular the gas stove came in handy: We cooked salmon pasta and veggie risotto for dinner and enjoyed coffee or tea with scrambled eggs for breakfast.

Our friends have two daughters: Emma and Annette. To avoid confusion the girls came up with name prefixes some time ago: "big Emma" and "small Emma". This works surprisingly well when they played together. One highlight was certainly the guided walk through the redwood forest at twilight. Since it was a rather large group we did not get to see a lot of wildlife besides a few bats. The girls had a lot of fun with the flashlights nonetheless. And the wildlife experience came later at the campground with a raccoon sneaking into the trunk of one of the cars checking it out for food!

Besuch in Deutschland - Visit To Germany

Mitte August bis Mitte September waren Emma und Judith zu Besuch in Deutschland. Endlich konnten sie mal wieder unsere Familien und Freunde sehen. Judiths Mutter war natürlich hoch erfreut, da beide für die gesamte Zeit bei ihr wohnten. Somit konnte sie ihre jüngste Enkeltocher voll und ganz geniessen. Aber auch ihre Patin Katja und alle anderen konnten es kaum erwarten bis beide dann endlich da waren. Leider wurden alle drei, Judiths Mutter, Judith und Emma zur gleichen Zeit für eine Woche krank (eine schwere Erkältung). Der deutsche Sommer ist halt nicht mit dem kalifornischen zu vergleichen. Trotzdem hatten beide eine sehr schöne Zeit und der Abschied nach vier Wochen kam dann wie immer schneller als erwartet.

Judith and Emma visited Germany from middle of August to middle of September. Finally they could see our families and friends again. Judith's mom was of course delighted since both stayed with her for the entire time. This way she could fully enjoy her youngest granddaughter. But also her godmother Katja and all the others couldn't wait until they had arrived at last. Unfortunately all three Judith's mom, Judith and Emma got sick (a bad cold) at the same time for one week. A summer in Germany is really not the same as a summer in California. Still they had a fabulous time and after four weeks the farewell came like always quicker than expected.

Besuch aus Deutschland - Visit From Germany

Die letzten zwei Wochen hatten wir Besuch aus Deutschland. Judiths Nichte (und Emmas Cousine) Johanna und ihre Cousine Anni wagten den grossen Sprung über den Teich. Natürlich haben wir uns sehr gefreut endlich mal wieder Gäste im Haus zu haben. Emma hatte auch riesigen Spass. Glücklicherweise hat die San Francisco Bay Area einiges an Sehenswürdigkeiten zu bieten. Tagesausflüge nach San Francisco, ins Monterey Bay Aquarium, Carmel und Point Lobos, Big Basin und den Zoo in Oakland wechselten sich mit ruhigen Tagen (genützt zum Einkaufen oder aber nur zum Faulenzen) ab - man soll es ja nicht übertreiben im Urlaub.

Of course we were very happy to finally welcome guests to our house again. Emma enjoyed it too and had lots of fun. Fortunately there is a lot to do and see in the San Francisco Bay Area. Day trips to San Francisco, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Carmel and Point Lobos, Big Basin and the Oakland zoo took turns with leisure days (used for shopping or just chilling out).

Blaues Kätzchen - Blue Kitty

Stefans Arbeitgeber hatte heute das jährliche Sommerpicknik. Dieses Jahr waren wir am Pazifik, genauer gesagt am Strand in Monterey. Anfangs war es bewölkt und recht kalt. Im Laufe des Tages wurde es jedoch sehr schön und sonnig. Stefan hat sich sogar einen rechten Sonnenbrand eingefangen. Neben dem hervorragenden Essen gab es wie üblich lustige Aktivitäten für Erwachsene und Kinder. Judith hat aber dieses Jahr auf die Kajakfahrt verzichtet, weil sie dabei letztesmal ins Meer gefallen ist. Emma war von der angebotenen Gesichtsmalerei sehr angetan und hat sich nach reiflicher Überlegung für eine blaue Katze entschieden. Das passte natürlich hervorragend zu ihren Augen und sie sah toll aus. Es war es ein wundervoller Tag.

Stefan's employer had its annual summer picnic today. This year we went to the Pazific - more precisely to the Beach in Monterey. At the beginning it was overcast and quite cold. During the course of the day, however, it became very nice and sunny. Stefan got even a pretty decent sunburn. Besides the excellent food there were many fun activities for both the grown-ups and children. Judith passed on the kayak ride this year though since she fell into the water last time around. Emma was very fascinated by the offered face painting. After careful deliberation she decided to go with the blue cat. Obviously that matched her blue eyes perfectly and she looked great. We had wonderful day.
